Switzerland
HISTORY Switzerland holds a specific rank in Europe. Attached to its neutrality, it has only recently joined NATO. Of course, Switzerland is not a member of the European Community and retains its own currency, the Swiss Franc. This tradition is maybe related to the fact that unlike many countries, it acknowledges not one or even two official languages but four, amongst which French, German & Italian predominate. Switzerland enjoys cultivating its own differences as well as paradoxes… From the height of its peaks down to the lowness and fertility of its valleys (glorified by the “Tao”)… From the white cross on a red background of its flag (the only square flag with the one of Vaticano), to the “Red Cross” on a white background of the world famous welfare organization, founded by Henri Dunant, a Swiss citizen… all the way to the Swiss cheese which holds in itself a paradox (the more cheese, the more holes and the more holes, the less cheese… !), Switzerland has hosted the earliest promoters of human rights, as well as the hard abused money of its offenders ! From the Head-Quarters of the United Nations in Geneva to the World Economic Forum in Davos, seven million Swiss manage to have the whole world spin around them, like melted cheese around a piece of bread (no wonder it is their national dish : “la fondue”). Swiss people are lovers of order and punctuality freaks (have a look at your Swiss watch)and pacifists that receive a military training throughout their lives. They also set for the whole world an example of micro Democratie; are you searching for an evidence ? They gave women the voting right in 1971, except for eight counties that granted it to them gradually throughout the next 20 years… Don’t laugh ! Swiss people are very serious people and we love them, don’t we ?
