Luxembourg

MAP OF LUXEMBOURG

HISTORY

Luxembourg is one of the first six original members of the European Community (which formerly hosted, in 1952, the head-quarters of the European Coal and Steel Community) and is one of the three members of Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands & Luxembourg). Three languages are spoken : French, German and Lëtzebuergesch, a Frankish dialect from the Moselle area.

Despite the 1831 London Conference which was to divide Luxembourg in two parts (the western French speaking part was given to Belgium and the eastern portion was to form a Grand Duchy, retaining links with the Netherlands) Luxembourg became independent only in 1890. Interestingly enough, the capital bears the same name as the country itself.

Mostly known for its banks, Luxembourg has also set up a system of low taxations which has attracted many holdings, companies’ head-offices and business travelers… In this way, the country scores one of the highest G.N.P. per inhabitant, in the world (around 450 000 people in total). You will also leave Luxembourg, enchanted by the beauty of its natural setting, appreciative of its culture and convinced that “small is beautiful”…
