Denmark (Scandinavia)
HISTORY Denmark is the southern state of a group of four countries known under the name of Scandinavia (from the Sanskrit word “skanda” meaning “war”). As a matter of fact, the Vikings were fierce fighters (as an example, the word Normandy, in France, is derived from “Normanni” or “North Men” and the Viking chief Rollon. became its king, in 911, under the name of Robert the 1st). In year 1000, the Danish chief Sven the 1st conquers over Norway & England. His son, the Great Canut the 1st rules over Norway, Sweden, England, Scotland…Despite many disputes, in 1397 the Kalmar agreement seals the union of Denmark, Norway & Sweden under the same banner. However, Danish’s influence decreased progressively as Sweden conquered its independence in 1523 and Norway became attached to Sweden in 1814 and later fully independent in 1905. However, Denmark keeps making significant steps in different respects: in 1792, slavery is abolished, in 1915 Danish ladies get the voting right. Denmark also becomes a member of the U.N. in 1945 and a member of the European Community in 1973. Going to Denmark, one discovers a lovely greenish country (you may even feel that it rains too much) and lovely people; from the business scene to the winding country roads, you will be enchanted ; but beware ! Isn’t the symbol of the country, a siren… ?
